Set in the very south-eastern part of France, Provence is a region of contrasting coastal mayhem of the French Riviera, including Cannes and Nice, and idyllic hinterland peace. Away from the coast you can centre yourself in one of the old Provencal villages where time seems to stand still, and where the sun-baked countryside is dominated by olive groves and vineyards.

The Vaucluse region, in north-west Provence, is home to Mont Ventoux and the beautiful perched hilltop villages of the Luberon Regional Natural Park. The town of Avignon, on the Rhone River, is a World Heritage site protecting the Palace of the Popes, the Saint-Benezet bridge, and the surrounding fortified walls. And the dramatic alpine scenery in north-eastern Provence includes Gorges du Verdon, a good place to see wildlife, and the interesting fortified mountain town of Briançon.
