Lake Tahoe vacation Guide

This popular summer and winter destination straddles the Nevada/California border – the western shore is in California, while the eastern shore is in Nevada. San Francisco is an easy 4-hour drive away. Southern Lake Tahoe is more developed, and it is here that you’ll find most of the casinos, accommodation, shops, and restaurants. The area is renown for its nightlife. In summer you can jet ski, parasail, and take a hot air balloon ride, while in winter the higher elevations get many feet of snow, and snow sports are all the go. There’s usually plenty of winter sunshine and ski vacation rentals in Lake Tahoe are in high demand.

Be sure to take the two-hour Emerald Bay sightseeing cruise for its views of the Sierra Nevada Mountains, Fannette Island and Vikingsholm Castle, a lakeside stone mansion. Northern Lake Tahoe, known as the North Shore, is less developed, and here you’ll find plenty of large Lake Tahoe vacation homes for short- or long-term rental. The north has more of a wilderness feel and there are plenty of opportunities for outdoor recreation, such as mountain biking and hiking, in the Tahoe and Toiyabe National Forests.
