Barcelona Holiday Guide
Holiday apartments in Barcelona are hugely popular and it’s easy to see why. Catalonia’s capital, Barcelona is the commercial and cultural centre of northern Spain, and a thriving metropolis that buzzes with life, day or night. Gaudi’s whimsical architecture is the city’s treasure, but since the city has been around for two millennia, there is much more to see besides these fantastic buildings. This very human-scale city is perfect for exploring on foot, so start your city tour with a stroll through Plaza de Catalunya, with its lovely fountains and statues, then stroll down Las Ramblas. Be sure to check out the colourful Boqueria Market for tasty food treats, as well as Barcelona's famous tapas bars, great for pre-dinner drinks. And explore the narrow medieval streets of the Gothic Quarter with its many old buildings. If you’re pushed for time, explore the city using the Barcelona City Hop-on Hop-off Tour which covers three different routes. Gaudi's bizarre Parc Guell, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is another must-see, as is the architect’s dramatic, and still un-finished, Sagrada Familia. The Picasso Museum displays works from the blue and pink periods. Afterwards, ascend Montjuic via the funicular, for a panoramic view of the city and harbour. As well as the numerous attractions within the city itself there are some great day trips to be enjoyed if you rent a car. The beautiful Costa Brava with its pretty coves and fishing villages is just an hour or so north of the city. To the south you will find the increasingly popular wine and Cava producing region of the Penedes. The nearest ski resorts are less than 2 hours from Barcelona. In recent years Barcelona has become one of the most popular weekend city break destinations in Europe and so short term holiday accommodation in Barcelona is at a premium. For this reason be sure to book your Barcelona apartment as far in advance of your trip as possible. For something a little different consider staying in the vibrant seaside town of Sitges just 30 minutes by train from the center of Barcelona. View our selection of holiday apartments in Sitges.
