Bali Holiday Guide
Bali is a province of Indonesia and one of the seventeen thousand islands that make up the Indonesian archipelago. Bali lies about 8 degrees south of the Equator and is well known as a holiday destination, with many flights arriving from nearby Singapore and Jakarta, as well as directly from most major international destinations. Bali’s capital is Denpasar, but main tourist destinations include nearby popular beach communities such as Kuta and Sanur, and the mountain town of Ubud. Hotels, guesthouses and residential accommodation are generally of a high standard, and many have private pools and lush tropical courtyards and gardens. Luxury villas in Bali are now widely available.
English is widely spoken in tourist areas, although it is worth learning rudimentary Bahasa Indonesia, or even some of the local Balinese language, if you wish to be understood by people in out-of-the-way places. Balinese food is delicious and widely available at reasonable prices. Hindu religious ceremonies and rituals form the basis of life for the Balinese people, and you are likely to come across ceremonies such as weddings and funerals. Arts and crafts made in Bali are exported worldwide and you will find many galleries offering handicrafts, paintings and fabrics. One of the best ways of exploring the countryside in Bali is to hire a car and driver.
