The Algarve is a major destination for self-catering holidays and a wide choice of holiday rentals are available for the holidaymaker. Situated in the extreme South of Portugal, the Algarve is linked from the north by the Lisbon-Albufeira-Castro Marim road (IP1) and by Faro international airport. The northern Algarve is sheltered by the Espinhação de Cão and the fertile region has fruit and nut orchards.

The southern coastline of the Algarve has a series of sandy beaches, often backed by rugged cliffs beset with grottoes. The mild Algarve climate is ideal for golf and there are many world-class courses. The marinas at Vilamoura and Lagos are packed with all types of craft.

There are any number of Algarvan towns and villages which have attractive architecture and a lively restaurant scene to suit all culinary tastes, plus there is plenty of nightlife at the many coastal resorts. At Albufeira you can see colourful fishing boats and check out Moorish architecture. The quiet town of Lagoa, surrounded by vineyards, is known for its wine. By contrast, bustling nearby Carvoeiro is a popular holiday resort and home to an old fortress and convent.
